Vic woman's roof ordeal 'terrifying'

An elderly Geelong woman who become stuck in the roof of her home for four days has been through a terrifying ordeal, a paramedic says.

An elderly woman trapped in the roof of her Victorian home for four days would have been terrified, a paramedic who assisted in the dramatic rescue says.

The woman in her 70s had gone up to her roof to check the source of a draught when she slipped and became wedged in the ceiling of her Geelong home for four days.

Justine Buckley, a paramedic who helped in the woman's rescue on Thursday, said emergency crews were faced with a difficult situation to get her out of the roof cavity.

There were concerns that the woman was traumatised and dehydrated after spending days lodged hip-to-hip in timber and unable to move.

"I couldn't imagine the turmoil she went through over those four days, just waiting for somebody to come and get her," Ms Buckley told Fairfax Radio on Friday.

"Especially with the heavy rain we had in Geelong - I am sure being up there with the rain pounding on the roof it would have been quite terrifying."

She said the woman was in good spirits but was lying in an awkward position when they arrived.

"She did manage to get into a comfortable position. She used the insulation in the roof to create a bit of support for herself."

The woman's ordeal finally ended when a friend who went to check on her heard her calling out inside and alerted emergency services.

It took firefighters and rescue teams an hour to free the woman, cutting a hole in the roof of the Marshall home and lifting her down into the house on a spineboard using roping gear.

The woman was taken to Geelong Hospital.
