Victorian paceman Scott Boland has credited his fitness regime as a big reason for becoming Australian cricket's selection bolter.

Boland is on standby for the first Test this month against the West Indies in Hobart, with a 12-man squad named on Tuesday.

He will be cover for Victorian teammate Peter Siddle and fellow quick Josh Hazlewood, who are sore after the Test series win over New Zealand, while James Pattinson and Nathan Coulter-Nile are the other two fast bowlers in the squad.

Mitchell Starc has already been ruled out of the series with a foot injury.

"Getting fitter and stronger, it's allowed me to bowl longer spells and sustain my pace for a lot longer," Boland said.

"It's given me a better chance to take wickets towards the back end of the day."

Boland said he was excited and nervous on Monday afternoon when selector Rod Marsh rang him with the good news.

The 26-year-old has played 26 matches for Victoria since making his Sheffield Shield debut in 2011 and put his hand up for higher honours in Perth last week when he bowled the Bushrangers to victory by snaring 7-31 in Western Australia's second innings.
