Victoria gears up for Australia Day

Thousands are expected to take in fireworks, sporting matches, parades and citizenship ceremonies across Victoria for Australia Day.

With a parade through Melbourne and fireworks painting the night sky, Victoria will light up in a kaleidoscope of colour to mark Australia Day.

More than 10,000 Victorians will line the streets of the state capital on Sunday to enjoy Melbourne's biggest people's march after the traditional flag-raising ceremony.

Many of the state's ethnic and multicultural communities will be on display, while Star Wars and Dr Who enthusiasts will also strut their stuff when the parade gets underway from Melbourne Town Hall at 11am (AEDT).

Away from the city, and in parks and backyards across the state there'll also be thousands of impromptu barbecues to mark the anniversary of the First Fleet landing at Sydney Cove.

But those Victorians not content with flipping snags, cracking tinnies and settling in for the Triple J Hottest 100 will have their choice of activities to celebrate the day.

Early birds can get their day off and running with a 10km dash in the Australia Day Fun Run on the Mornington Peninsula while late risers visiting the Shrine at midday will start with a bang as the memorial site hosts a 21-gun salute.

In a clash between Australia's two biggest cities, Melbourne Victory will host Sydney FC at Etihad Stadium at 5pm, before the fireworks display begins over Docklands for the first time.

Almost two tonnes of explosives will be used during the 15-minute show, display director Allan Spiegel said, in Victoria's largest Australia Day fireworks display ever.

"It is a very high-energy display with almost 11,500 individual bursts," Mr Spiegel said.

Victoria will also host 76 citizenship ceremonies on Sunday, with 4491 people from 118 countries celebrating Australia Day for the first time as an Australian citizen.

Melbourne is expected to be partly cloudy and reach 25 degrees on Sunday.
