Many Victorians think NSW is Australia's most corrupt state, but almost a third think corruption is widespread in their home state.

Victoria's anti-corruption commission surveyed 1080 people on what they think about corruption, with three out of four respondents saying they would report it.

The Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission carried out the research to track community attitudes and encourage more people to come forward.

Public sector employees can stop corruption and potentially help save millions of taxpayer dollars by reporting their suspicions, IBAC says.

"Just like we can all lose out to corruption, we all have a role to play in preventing corruption too," chief executive Alistair Maclean said in a statement.

The survey found locals thought NSW was Australia's most corrupt state, Queensland was the second most corrupt, Australian Capital Territory got third place and Victoria came in fourth.

Tasmania was considered the country's least corrupt region.

Thirty-one per cent of those surveyed felt Victoria was corrupt, while more than half said they were afraid of being harassed for reporting corruption.

Many also had concerns about privacy.

IBAC is reassuring people it is safe to report corruption because there are laws protecting whistleblowers from being harassed.

"You are backed up by key agencies, including IBAC, who will listen, and protect your identity and information," Mr Maclean said.

IBAC is also responsible for exposing police misconduct and investigating complaints from the public about officers who behave improperly.

More than 70 per cent of those surveyed said they would report police corruption.
