When police asked a Melbourne man why he was driving an unregistered car, he simply gestured to his false number plates for an explanation - 'IMANOB', they read.

Casey Highway Patrol pulled the car over in Hampton Park on Tuesday afternoon, after officers spotted the interesting plates.

Checks confirmed the car had been unregistered for almost three years, with the driver providing only a short explanation for the crime.

"Because I'm a nob," the man, who was fined more than $1000, told police.
