Fears of a public backlash against certain migrant and refugee communities have prompted the Victoria Police Multi-faith Council to issue a public letter urging cultural sensivity, respect and understanding at a time of heightened security awareness in Australia.
The signatories of the letter reject all violence, while highlighting the right of all Victorians to worship and practice their faiths.
But the letter also calls on religious leaders to assure their followers that the authorities are targetting criminal activity, and as such they should report any instances of religious and racial vilification against them.
One of the Members of the Victoria Police Multi-faith Council is the Ethnic Communities' Council of Victoria.
Its chairman is Eddie Micallef and he spoke to Kristina Kukolja.
