A Victorian farmer who was trapped in a hay baler for up to 36 hours has died in hospital.

A Victorian farmer has died in hospital after being trapped in a hay baler for up to 36 hours.

Don Fagg, aged in his 60s, had to be resuscitated at the Mount Duneed property before he could be transferred to hospital after he was freed from the machine on Tuesday night.

He died just before midnight on Wednesday in the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he had been flown in a critical condition.

"It is believed the man had been there across a number of days and was transported to hospital in a critical condition," Victoria Police said in a statement.

It's understood Mr Fagg was found by neighbours on Tuesday evening with emergency services called at 6.45pm.

It then took the CFA and SES crews until 9.20pm to free him.

Worksafe has been notified and police will prepare a report for the coroner.
