Victorian govt won't support change to GST

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine says he doesn't support any increase or broadening of the GST.

The Victorian government won't support raising or broadening the GST.

Premier Denis Napthine maintains there will be no change to the tax.

"As premier of Victoria, I do not support an increase in the rate of GST and I do not support an increase in the breadth of GST," he told reporters on Tuesday.

Former Victorian Premier John Brumby has urged state and territory leaders to make a "courageous" push for reform of the GST, describing any increase an inevitable.

Queensland Senator Ian Macdonald has also called for the tax to be broadened to include fresh food as debate about the GST gains momentum after federal cuts to state health and education funding.

Dr Napthine said he would fight for a fair share of GST being returned to Victorians.

"We simply are being dudded by the GST distribution. We only get 88 cents for every dollar of GST we pay and NSW, across the Murray, get 98 cents back," he said.

"That defies logic and common sense.

"For Queenslanders, to get $1.08 back for every dollar spent in GST, (that) is absolutely unfair that they get 20 cents in the dollar more than we get."
