Victorians using less electricity

Victorian households are using less electricity due to warmer than normal weather and growing use of solar power, distributor SP AusNet says.

Victorians are using less electricity as solar power becomes more popular and the weather proves warmer than usual, according to the state's main electricity distributor.

SP AusNet, which owns power lines, poles and towers across Victoria, experienced a decline in electricity volumes in the year to March 31, but its revenue from electricity distribution still grew by 10 per cent because of price increases, the company said.

"A warmer winter, combined with changing consumer behaviours and the continued take-up of solar energy have contributed to the 1.9 per cent decline in volume," SP Ausnet said.

Gas volumes fell by 7.5 per cent, also due to warmer weather, it said.

The company's annual net profit fell 35 per cent to $178 million, due to costs associated with a tax dispute and changes to its management structure.

Transmission charges account for about five per cent of a residential electricity bill in Victoria.

SP AusNet shares were down two cents at $1.35 at 1250 AEST.
