Voters in the inner-northern Melbourne seat of Northcote will head to the polls on November 18 to choose a new state MP.
The by-election was prompted by the death of Labor's Fiona Richardson, who lost her battle with cancer in August.
The poll will be hotly contested by the Greens as the state government tries to retain the valuable seat.
Voters have been urged to check their enrolments ahead of the poll, after the Saturday date was confirmed by Legislative Assembly Speaker Colin Brooks on Thursday.
'Voting is compulsory for all electors on the roll for Northcote District," Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately said.
It takes just a few minutes to register to vote or update details online.
The electoral roll will close on September 28 and the final nomination day for candidates will be on October 19, when early voting will also start.
Labor has selected union official and speech pathologist Clare Burns as its candidate, while the Greens have nominated Lidia Thorpe, who hopes to become the first Aboriginal woman elected to Victorian parliament.
It will be a tight contest between the two, with the Greens eating away at the ALP's vote in inner Melbourne for some time.
Fiona Richardson held Northcote since 2006 and was Australia's first minister for the prevention of family violence.
