An Australian base jumper has plunged to his death in south-east France after leaping from the 2,600 metre Brevent peak in the Haute-Savoie on Sunday.
Rescue workers said the 33-year-old was found “several hundred metres below in a wooded area” and probably died on impact.
Youtube video of the Brevent Peak decent, shot by other base jumpers, shows a heavily wooded area that levels out before the ground drops away again.
The video shows other jumpers in wing suits coming perilously close to the ground before the drop.
The peak has only been used in the extreme sport since 2012.
Two hours after the Australian died, a 52-year-old French base jumper described as “extremely experienced” was also killed.
He hit a rock face on his descent from Mont Granier in the neighbouring Isere region of south eastern France.
"He managed [to] get over the first rock face, but not the second," one of the rescuers told Agence France Presse.
Both accidents are being investigated.
The latest deaths bring to four the number of people killed in the extreme sport in France since the beginning of August.
Two base jumpers, one from Switzerland, the other from France, died in similar accidents in the Alps and French Pyrenees on August the sixth.
Defined as a jump off a fixed high point, the name 'Base Jump' stems from the acronym for Building, Antenna, Span (such as bridges) and Earth (natural settings).
