Vigil to be held to honour slain woman

A vigil will be held in Brisbane on Friday for an Indonesian woman killed and dismembered by her Australian partner.

Mayang Prasetyo, 27, allegedly died at the hands of partner Marcus Volke, 28, who took his own life soon after police found the woman's remains boiling on the stove in their inner-city Brisbane unit.

Ms Mayang was a transgender person who identified as a girl throughout childhood. Members of various lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender support groups in Brisbane have organised a vigil to honour her life.

The vigil will be held at 5pm in New Farm on Friday, with the venue yet to be announced.

President of the Australian Transgender Support Association of Queensland (ATSAQ) Gina Mather has been inundated with messages of support for the slain woman.

She said she had also fielded numerous phone calls expressing outrage over Tuesday's coverage of the death in The Courier-Mail newspaper, which labelled Ms Mayang a "she-male".

"Those headlines do not help the transgender cause," she said.

The ATSAQ has garnered more than 20,000 signatures in a petition demanding an apology for the "insensitive" coverage.

The newspaper has responded by acknowledging the public reaction, saying it had no intention of diminishing the value of Ms Mayang's life or adding to the grief being felt by her family.
