Vikings have battled on the shores of Sydney’s Darling Harbour.

Dozens of people dressed in authentic Viking costumes have recreated a traditional medieval battle to launch a new exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

The exhibition’s curator, Gunnar Andersson, says he hopes 'Vikings – Beyond the Legend' will break down the well-known myths and stereotypes surrounding this medieval civilisation.

"Everybody has an idea about what Vikings were and how they were in Europe, but we are trying to show other sides of Viking life," Mr Andersson says.
