Vinales up for the fight at Aust MotoGP

Things haven't gone to plan for Movistar Yamaha's Maverick Vinales after a blistering start to the MotoGP season but the Spaniard is determined to finish well.

Not many people go to work facing the prospect of getting spat across asphalt, grass and gravel at approaching 200kph.

Fewer still can have that happen to them then dust themselves off and go back to work, but that's exactly what Movistar Yamaha rider Maverick Vinales did at Phillip Island on Friday.

And he did it exceedingly well.

By his own admission, Vinales was pushing too hard on an out lap with cold tyres in the second practice session of the Australian MotoGP and was dumped unceremoniously onto the track at turn eight.

But thankfully he was up on his feet before he'd come to a complete stop, made his way back to his garage and finished the session in fifth place.

"I'm feeling ok, it was my mistake and I'm sorry for the team," Vinales said.

"The wind here is really cold so you have to be really careful and get into a rhythm before you push.

"The bike is working well (but) not perfectly, so we need to take another step.

"I feel good going into Saturday because we have a lot of room to improve."

Vinales, a Moto3 world champion in 2013, started his first season with Movistar Yamaha in stunning fashion after two years with the factory Suzuki team.

He turned heads with his blistering pace in testing and carried that through to the season where he won three of the first five races.

But technical enhancements to the Yamaha actually worked against his strengths as a rider as the season wore on, with the Spaniard managing just three podiums in the last 10 races.

With three races left, the 22-year-old is third in world championship standings, but 41 points back from leader Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez and 30 back from Ducati Team's Andrea Dovizioso.

Vinales knows he needs to keep pushing the envelope and hope for a large dose of good fortune if he is to score his maiden MotoGP world title.

"They have to make a mistake, so we have to push 100 per cent," Vinales said.

"But it won't be easy ... they are in really good form and we're coming from many bad races.

"I'm going to try to finish this year the best I can. I want to win another race, so we have to try to focus this weekend and be strong."
