Violent, mistakenly freed Vic man arrested

Police have arrested a Melbourne man who was mistakenly released while facing charges for serious assault and making threats to kill.

A Melbourne man mistakenly released from custody while facing serious assault, weapons and threat to kill charges has been arrested.

The 35-year-old Altona North man was located in a town in the state's northwest by Victoria Police's fugitive task force.

Police believe he had been at large for more than a month, however the circumstances surrounding his release are still being investigated.

An administrative error is believed to be the cause of the bungle, which was discovered when the man did not appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday, despite supposedly being held on remand.

The man was said to have a significant history of violence, including violence against women.

A 36-year-old Newport woman was also located uninjured at the property and she has not been arrested.

The man is expected to appear in an out-of-sessions court hearing on Saturday.
