An Fiji-bound Virgin Australia plane has been cleared to fly after reversing into a set of stairs in Melbourne.

The aircraft was delayed for almost two hours after it made "minor contact" with the tarmac stairs while leaving the boarding gate at Melbourne Airport.

Virgin said engineers closely inspected the plane before allowing it to make a step in the right direction towards Nadi, Fiji.
