Virginia State University was forced into lockdown after an on-campus shooting.

University police tweeted on Saturday night local time: "Shooting on Campus - VSU is on lockdown. Avoid the area. Updates to follow."

A second tweet said police were on the scene after campus went into lockdown and asked people to avoid the area.

The university's website said the Petersburg school was celebrating the final day of its homecoming.

The Chesterfield Police Department said in a statement the incident happened about 8:25pm.

They said responding officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound with non-life-threatening injuries.

Chesterfield Police said officers believed this was an 'isolated incident' and there was no further threat to the campus.

The lockdown was lifted after police cleared the scene but officers would remain 'vigilant', the VSU Police tweeted.
