Mitchelton-Scott's Simon Yates has retained a slender, one-second lead in the Vuelta a Espana after a thrilling 10th stage won by Italian Elia Viviani.

British rider Yates held onto the red jersey for the Australian team despite sustaining a puncture towards the end of the stage, finishing 51st.

Yates kept his narrow general classification advantage over home favourite Alejandro Valverde and a 14-second lead over 2016 winner Nairo Quintana.

The 26-year-old was helped to get back on track and into the bunch when his bike needed some mechanical repairs heading into the closing 14km.

Adam Yates, Simon's twin and teammate, was among the riders who stayed behind to lead him back to the peloton.

"Things went relatively straightforward until the end, then I must have hit something on the side of the road, I punctured twice so it made things a bit nervous but we managed to control," Simon Yates said.

"I'm improving every year to try and win the general classification and now we'll see how far I can go with this red jersey."

Australia's Jack Haig, also riding for Mitchelton-Scott, lies in 20th place overall.

Viviani pipped world champion Peter Sagan to the finish line by riding along the barriers after being led out by teammates Fabio Sabatini and Michael Morkov at the end of the flat 177-km stage from Salamanca to Fermoselle.

It was his 17th victory in 2018 and a 60th win for his Quick-Step Floors team.

Vivani's compatriot Giacomo Nizzolo came third.

Italian rider Simone Petilli had to abandon the race after suffering a serious crash 40km from the finish.

Petelli was taken into an ambulance on a stretcher with suspected shoulder and face injuries and lost several teeth according to reports in the Spanish media.

Wednesday's stage 11 is a 207.8-km route from Mombuey to Ribeira Sacra. Luintra.
