Sydney's expanded Vivid festival is expected to be the most popular yet.

More than 25,000 travel packages for the 18-day festival of lights and music have been sold - a 25 per cent increase on last year, Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres says.

Mr Ayres officially opened the seventh instalment of Vivid on Friday night.

It features light installations at Circular Quay, The Rocks, Walsh Bay, Darling Harbour, Martin Place and the Harbour Bridge, plus new precincts at Chatswood and Chippendale.
