Vizer quits as SportAccord chief

Following a backlash against his attacks on the IOC, Marius Vizer has resigned as president of the umbrella body for international sports federations.

Marius Vizer has resigned as president of the umbrella body for international sports federations following the backlash against his attacks on the IOC.

Vizer announced his resignation on Sunday as head of SportAccord, which represents Olympic and non-Olympic federations.

About two dozen federations have withdrawn or suspended their SportAccord memberhip since Vizer blasted the International Olympic Committee and its president, Thomas Bach, in a speech last month in Sochi, Russia.

Vizer was defiant in his resignation statement, saying "I withdraw with honour and for the honour of sport, its credibility in society, and I hope that one day sport becomes a completely transparent system, a moral code and a model for society."
