Vodafone losing thousands of customers

Vodafone posted another large loss and lost more than half a million customers in the first half of 2013.

Vodafone has posted another massive loss as customers continue to depart the struggling telco.

One of the company's joint owners says 551,000 customers left Vodafone in the first six months of 2013, more than the 443,000 customers it lost in the second half of 2012.

That's despite a new strategy by Vodafone to repair the damage done to its brand by network and customer service issues.

The telco had just over six million customers at June 30, but that number is expected to continue to fall.

Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA), as it is formally known, is equally owned by Hutchison Telecommunications Australia (HTA) and Vodafone.

HTA said its share of VHA's net loss for the six months to June 30 was $109.1 million, a slight improvement from a net loss of $138 million during the same time in 2012.

That indicates VHA made a net loss of about $218 million in the six months to June.

HTA said customer numbers and revenue would continue to decline in 2013, but it is confident the company's strategy will transform its business.

"VHA will continue to focus on implementing its turnaround plan with support from its shareholders, but until the momentum from improvements in brand perception takes effect, the net customer loss and increased investment to drive growth will impact financial performance.

"The continued decline in the customer base has been factored into the company forecasts on which the turnaround plan is based."
