Volleyroos down Japan at Asian Champs

The Volleyroos have won a crucial group match against Japan at the Asian Championships in Tehran.

The Australian men's volleyball team has beaten Japan 3-1 in a crucial group match at the Asian Men's Championships in Tehran.

The win for the Volleyroos means the side will avoid a possible quarterfinal match-up with hosts and hot tournament favourites, Iran.

The Australians have been battling indifferent form during the Asian Championships but are still in the running to win the title.

Many observers were shocked when Australia was beaten 3-1 by Qatar in the opening game, but Qatar remains undefeated at the Championships and has already proven itself to be a much improved team.

The Australians then beat Turkmenistan and India in straight sets, before losing 3-0 to China in their first match of the second round.

The Volleyroos looked in trouble early against Japan, losing the opening set 23-25, before fighting back to win the next three 25-21, 25-23, 25-21.

It's expected Australia will now play South Korea in the quarter finals, while Japan will have to take on Iran.
