Australian volleyball captain Tom Edgar has inspired his team to a five-set win over Egypt, their first win of the 2015 World Cup in Japan.

The 212cm-tall Edgar finished with 50 points for the match, as Australia held out Egypt 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 20-25, 15-13 in Hiroshima.

The win comes after three straight defeats, with coach Roberto Santilli full of praise for his captain.

"We found the key of the game today, that was 'give the ball to Edgar'," he said.

"When he has days like these he can solve your problems, and today he solved the problems."

Santilli said that after three games lost, the atmosphere inside the team had started to be a bit heavy.

"Today was even difficult to start, so the win was very important."

Edgar had to leave the court during the fourth set to try and stem bleeding from a small cut on his hand, but is certain to be fit for Sunday's game against Canada.

"I think we really fought today, which was a positive thing for our team," Edgar said.

"It's something we have to build on, and I'm expecting even better performances going forward.

"I'm really happy how the younger guys really showed some character and some fight today."
