Volleyroos missing three stars for finals

Australia's men's volleyball team will be without three Olympians ahead of their maiden World League finals appearance in Italy.

Australia will be without three of their Olympic stars for their first match of the volleyball World League finals against the US in Italy.

Veteran Nathan Roberts and Travis Passier missed last weekend's historic qualifying wins over the Netherlands and France in Sydney, while setter Harry Peacock aggravated an existing injury and did not make the trip to host city Florence.

Regardless, coach Jon Uriarte is confident the Volleyroos have the depth to cover the losses for their opening game early on Friday morning (AEST).

"I've got a big belief about the way we work," he said.

"We've done amazing things in the past, like qualify for the (2012 London) Olympics.

"Something huge is happening. We've got the team, and I need to use all the cards we've got up our sleeve."

The men's team have been drawn against the US and Italy in their pool, while Brazil, Russia and Iran contest the second group.

Although his side are considered outsiders, skipper Aidan Zingel believes Australia can make their mark against the world's best.

"We've become a whole different team, it's phenomenal," he said.

"I'm so happy to be part of it. This is the same feeling we had when we qualified for the Olympics. It's something so big and so special for us."

Australia haven't featured in the World League since 1999.
