Volvo considers more cars in V8s field

Incoming V8 Supercars manufacturer Volvo hope to have more than two cars on the grid beyond their maiden season in the category.

Volvo say they are already considering adding more cars to the V8 Supercars field as early as 2015.

The Swedish manufacturer is set to join the category next season under the banner Volvo Polestar Racing, in partnership with existing outfit Garry Rogers Motorsport (GRM).

The team will race two of the brand's S60 model sedans, steered by Scott McLaughlin and a second yet-to-be-confirmed driver.

As it stands, Volvo will have the smallest number of entries on the grid in 2014 - with Holden boasting 13 Commodores, Ford's six Falcons, four Nissan Altimas and three Mercedes-Benz E63 AMGS.

But Volvo's global motorsport boss Derek Crabb said the prospect of having more S60s appealed to him.

"Clearly, the more cars on the grid, the more exposure Volvo gets and the more chances Volvo has of getting a win, which we need," Crabb told the v8supercars.com.au website.

"But then you have to put the cost back into it. So yeah, we dream about year two and year three but let's get through year one first."

Polestar Racing owner Christian Dahl agreed.

"I think if you are going to fight for the championship in the long term, you need more cars out there because there are a lot of Holdens and only two Volvos," Dahl said.

"But that is a question for the future."

While the incoming manufacturer is still months away from competing in V8 Supercars, it suffered an early setback on Monday with GRM sponsor Fujitsu deciding not to renew its deal with the team for 2014 - citing a change in their "commercial focus".

The company has backed GRM since 2010, but Garry Rogers is hopeful his new-look outfit will find an alternative sponsor.

"Next year's program has generated a lot of interest and we will now be following up all avenues so as to secure suitable commercial business partners to join the GRM team," Rogers said.

The second last round of this year's V8 Supercars championship begins on November 22 at Phillip Island.
