Voss wants to help Hinkley succeed in AFL

While Michael Voss wants to coach again one day, for now his focus is helping Ken Hinkley at Port Adelaide.

Michael Voss' dreams of becoming an AFL premiership coach are on hold while Ken Hinkley tries to realise his.

Voss has joined Port Adelaide as their midfield coach and will be a crucial lieutenant for Hinkley.

After missing out on the grand final by less than a goal, the Power have recruited ruck-forward Patrick Ryder from Essendon and will go into next season as one of the top premiership favourites.

Now Port have recruited Voss after losing Phil Walsh to the Adelaide senior coaching role.

Voss has made no secret of his desire to coach again after being in charge at Brisbane for nearly five seasons.

But the three-time Lions premiership captain and Brownlow Medallist said his focus now is doing a good job under Hinkley.

"I have very long term aspirations of being a coach again," Voss said.

"But that's not my agenda here - my agenda here is to do the role exceptionally well."

And Hinkley is rapt to have Voss on board.

"I have a lot of help here now - I have a bloke who's coached in my seat for five years," Hinkley said.

"He's going to be able to be such a great sounding board for me.

"I'm a bit older, but Michael has great experience that I haven't had."

Voss' appointment as an assistant at Port means he has gone about coaching in reverse order.

But he will not dwell on whether taking the Brisbane role without an apprenticeship was the right decision.

"Whether I did it in the right order or the wrong order, for me it's not necessarily a debate," he said.

"But what it has given me is hopefully a skill set that I can impart on this group."
