A US man has warned Barack Obama to stay away from his girlfriend at a polling booth in Chicago.

President Obama was at the polling station during early voting for the midterm elections when the man walked past him and quipped, "don’t touch my girlfriend."

In video footage of the exchange, the embarrassed woman standing next to the president can be heard saying "I am sorry, please excuse him."

But the president got in on the joke, telling the man "I really wasn’t planning to."

He then remarked that the man, identified as Mike Jones, was an example of a "brother just embarrassing you for no reason."

"Give me a kiss; give him something to talk about," President Obama said.

"Now he’s really jealous."

Watch the hilarious exchange in the video above.
