Voting closes in Philippines' elections

Voting has closed in the Philippines with candidates supported by President Rodrigo Duterte leading in the senatorial race according to early results.

Voting in mid-term elections in the Philippines has closed, with early results showing candidates supported by President Rodrigo Duterte leading in the senatorial race.

Most polling centres closed at 6pm local time on Monday after 12 hours of voting. Some precincts closed later to account for delays caused by malfunctioning counting machines and some untoward incidents.

Overall, the elections were successful, the military said.

"Very minimal breach of peace and order was monitored and reported from all over the country," said Colonel Noel Detoyato, a military spokesman.

"There were last-minute attempts to disrupt the conduct of elections but these were immediately addressed by our security forces," he added.
