WA Alcoa workers end strike, back new deal

Workers at five Alcoa mines and refineries in Western Australia have ended their 53-day strike, voting to accept a new enterprise bargaining agreement.

Workers at Alcoa's Western Australian operations have voted to back a new enterprise bargaining agreement, ending a strike that has lasted 53 days.

About 1500 workers at the Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup refineries and Huntley and Willowdale bauxite mines walked off the job on August 9, saying the company's proposed agreement offered no job security.

The workers voted to accept the new offer on Friday, with the Australian Council of Trade Unions saying it locked in job security by preventing the creep of contracting, labour hire and casualisation.
