WA asylum seeker dies after detention harm

An asylum seeker who self-harmed at a West Australian detention centre where riots then erupted has died in hospital, Border Force has confirmed.

A detainee who self-harmed at a West Australian detention centre, sparking a riot, has died in hospital.

According to the Refugee Action Coalition, the 22-year-old Iraqi asylum seeker was found in his cell at Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre, north-east of Perth, on Sunday evening and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

"The matter will be referred to the state coroner for investigation," Australian Border Force said in a statement.
