WA building contractor jailed for bribery

A former building contractor has been jailed for at least seven-and-a-half months for bribing a West Australian council employee with a bobcat.

A former building contractor has been jailed for 15 months for bribing a West Australian council employee.

Kim Laurence Walter, 56, was convicted last November of providing a former City of Stirling building co-ordinator with a $43,450 bobcat to use on his hobby farm.

Walter's company, Maintenance and Management Solutions, was awarded $346,255 worth of council contracts between February 2005 and November 2008.

WA District Court Judge Anthony Derrick said on Monday Walter clearly intended to ensure continued work for his company when he gave the council employee the bobcat.

He said bribery of a public officer struck at the integrity of local government.

Walter will be eligible for parole after serving seven-and-a-half months behind bars.

The Walter case is the last relating to a multi-million-dollar procurement scandal at the City of Stirling, which was exposed by the Corruption and Crime Commission in 2010.

Six other private contractors were convicted of corruption connected to the same council employee.

The employee, who cannot be named, was responsible for awarding building and works contracts for the council from 2003 until his dismissal in 2010.
