West Australian authorities have downgraded the emergency warning for a bushfire that had been burning out of control in the Shire of Toodyay.

A watch and act warning is now in place for people in the southern part of Toodyay near Salt Valley Road, Challeon Lane, Panorama View, Hoddy Well Road and Sandplain Road.

Firefighters have controlled the head of the fire and consolidated containment lines as weather conditions improve, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services says.

However the fire, which is moving slowly east, is not yet fully contained and burning embers still pose a risk to householders.
