WA couple jailed over shooting death

A Perth couple have been jailed after the woman lured a convicted drug dealer to a house where her partner killed him over a debt.

A Perth man has been jailed for unlawfully killing a convicted drug dealer over a debt, while his former partner has also been jailed for luring the victim to his death.

Paulo Nunzio Stagno, 30, and Danielle Kovac, 28, were acquitted by a jury of murder, but found guilty of manslaughter over the fatal shooting of Mite Naumovski in September 2011.

Stagno was sentenced in the West Australian Supreme Court on Monday to nine years in prison, to be partly served concurrently with an existing sentence.

It means he must serve 14 years behind bars in total, with his earliest release date being in March 2024.

Kovac was sentenced to five years and four months behind bars.

She must serve three years and four months in prison before being eligible for parole, with her earliest release date being in September next year.

The pair lured Mr Naumovski, 38, to a Nollamara house where Stagno shot him four times in the front and twice in the back as he tried to retreat, the court heard.

The victim's plastic wrapped body was later found in a car outside a motel.

Stagno had claimed he acted in self defence and that Mr Naumovski had wanted to kill him over an $8000 drug debt.

In sentencing, Justice Michael Corboy said the couple showed a callous disregard in the way they treated Mr Naumovski's body.

He said Stagno had the advantage of surprise because the victim did not know he would be in the house.

Justice Corboy said Kovac tried to minimise her involvement and was immature, describing her as an attention seeker.

He said Stagno had tried to mislead police, but accepted that he was now remorseful.

The judge also noted the victim impact statements from the "devastated" family, saying they felt angry, a "deep sense of despair" and a loss of hope.
