A tropical cyclone due to hit WA has been downgraded, but authorities are warning residents to prepare themselves as damaging winds and heavy rainfall are expected to continue.

Flash flooding, heavy rainfall, flooding in low-lying coastal areas and winds to 100km/h are predicted for WA's south east on Saturday.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a warning for residents between Kalbarri and Hopetoun in the state's south west to prepare for tough weather conditions.

"This is a rare weather event for people in the south west of WA that could cause major damage to homes and make travel very dangerous," the DFES said in a statement.

Warnings for areas north east of Kalbarri have been cancelled.

But the DFES says people in Perth, Geraldton, Jurien Bay, Dalwallinu, Southern Cross, Katanning, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River and Albany should take action to ensure their safety.

This includes staying inside away from windows, unplugging electrical appliances during lightning and sheltering away from tree and powerlines if caught outside.

"The strongest winds and heaviest rainfall will be over central and eastern parts of the South West Land Division, well to the east of the Perth Metropolitan Area," the statement said.

Coastal areas are expected to experience higher than normal tides.

The Bureau of Meteorology downgraded the cyclone system but warned wild conditions would continue throughout the day.
