WA government axes big bureaucrat payouts

Big compensation payouts to senior WA bureaucrats whose contracts end early have been axed by the state government.

Under a policy that had been in place since the Richard Court era, they could seek a package of up to 12 months' remuneration, including salary, car allowance and superannuation.

But under a new policy that began this month, senior members of the public service will now receive four months' remuneration for each full year of their remaining contract, up to a maximum of 12 months.

Further legislative changes will also limit the maximum payment when contracts end early to 12 months' salary rather than remuneration.

"Large, excessive payouts are something I want my government and future government to avoid when possible," Premier Mark McGowan said in a statement.

The state government says if the same approach had applied to senior executive service officers since the change of government in March, compensation costs would have been about 41 per cent lower.

Around $6 million has been paid to more than 20 senior executives who lost their job after Labor swept to power.

Talk about payouts turned to Barnett government ministerial staff in parliament on Thursday, revealing a total gross entitlements payout of $5.6 million.

One chief of staff was paid $288,100, based on his pay scale and years of service.
