Hospitals, police stations and schools are among the 20 land assets listed for sale by the West Australian government to raise fund to help ease the state's debt woes.

All the land is in the Perth metropolitan area. Some asses will be sold in full and some will have parts divested in the next 12 to 18 months for commercial, residential and retail use.

Assets include Fremantle police station, parts of the police headquarters in East Perth, the heritage-listed East Perth Power Station, as well as parcels of land held by the agriculture and food department (DAFWA) and the Public Transport Authority (PTA).

Five hospital precincts - Princess Margaret, Swan Districts, Kaleeya, Woodside Maternity and Shenton Park - will also be up for sale.

Lands Minister Terry Redman said on Thursday a further 450 government lots would be assessed and brought to market.

Seven sites are almost ready for sale, with the aim of raising about $250 million.

"We expect initial land sales to generate about $250 million for the state, but some of these sites are unique and it is only through testing the market that we will be able to get a clear indication of their value," Premier Colin Barnett said on Thursday.

They are Shenton Park Hospital, Claremont Oval, Wanneroo Lot 500, land around the Cottesloe School for the Deaf, parts of the DAFWA sites in Forrestfield and Medina, and the PTA area C site in Forrestfield.

Shenton Park Hospital will be decommissioned in October, and the majority of services will be transferred to the new Fiona Stanley Hospital.

Kaleeya Hospital's obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatal services will move to Fiona Stanley Hospital, and sub-acute services such as aged care will move to Fremantle Hospital. Elective surgery will be spread between both facilities.

Cabinet has also approved the establishment of a Land Asset Advisory Group to give advice on the sale of property assets.

The sales come after the state's credit rating was downgraded by both Moody's and Standard & Poor's.

Perth Market Authority, which operates Market City in Canning Vale, the Utah Point port handling facilities in Port Hedland and Kwinana Bulk Terminal south of Perth were announced this month as the first assets up for sale.

The state government said in August it aimed to net $6 billion over three years from the sales.
