WA govt pushes ahead with sex offender law

The WA government will this week introduce a dangerous sex offender bill to parliament aimed at toughening current laws.

A dangerous sex offender bill will be introduced to WA parliament this week aimed at amending current laws to make it more difficult for criminals to be freed from prison, but the opposition is yet to offer its support.

Attorney-General John Quigley said the legislation amendment included "reversing the onus of proof" so prisoners must satisfy the court they will comply with all the conditions of a community supervision order.

There will also be a presumption against bail for dangerous sex offenders charged with breaching a supervision order.

"These individuals will remain in custody until the matter has been dealt with by the court unless there are exceptional reasons why they should be granted bail," Mr Quigley said.

A third amendment will provide for interim supervision orders that may be applicable in some cases.

Mr Quigley criticised the Liberal opposition for stalling his government's no body, no parole legislation and urged them not to do the same with this bill.

Opposition Leader Mike Nahan said the Liberal party supported tightening regulations but they still had to go through the bill before backing any changes.

"It might be fundamentally flawed, it might make the situation worse. We haven't seen it," he told reporters.

It comes after a Supreme Court judge recently ruled that a pedophile, who once committed a sex offence while being driven away from prison where he had served time for other sex crimes, could be released from jail.

The 67-year-old man, who cannot be named, will be subject to 47 strict conditions under an eight-year supervision order.
