WA highway 'threatens' ancient artefacts

Thousands of ancient artefacts have been uncovered on the banks of a Perth wetland threatened by a controversial highway extension, according to WA Greens.

The West Australian government's "flawed" assessment of an Aboriginal heritage site, in the path of a highway extension, missed thousands of ancient artifacts, the Greens say.

More than 2000 artefacts were previously uncovered under the banks of Perth's Beeliar Wetlands, which are part of the project area for the controversial Roe 8 Highway extension, Greens MP Lynn MacLaren says.

Ms McClaren said there had been an "inadequate" level of examination by WA government heritage officers, claiming they only looked at its "highly disturbed surface" and dug one 20cm pit.

"This cursory examination by Department of Aboriginal Affairs heritage officers, which unsurprisingly found nothing, was used as the basis for the Aboriginal Cultural Materials Committee's decision at its June 2015 meeting to decide that this site ... was no longer a site," Ms McLaren said.
