WA Labor tax pledge already broken: Nahan

WA Labor has already proposed two new taxes, "value capture" and a surcharge for foreign property buyers, state treasurer Mike Nahan says.

West Australian Treasurer Mike Nahan insists his promise not to increase taxes or introduce new ones should be believed while the opposition has already proposed two.

Dr Nahan told reporters on Wednesday WA Labor leader Mark McGowan was trying to "weasel out" of conceding his "value capture" plan and pledge to make foreign property buyers pay a four per cent surcharge were taxes.

The treasurer also took a swipe at Mr McGowan's pledge on Tuesday to not introduce or raise taxes, which comes days after opposition treasury spokesman Ben Wyatt said voters didn't swallow such promises by politicians.

"This is division at the core of the Labor party's campaign and Ben Wyatt is right," Dr Nahan told reporters.

"He knows the circumstances that Labor is in: committed to $4 billion of expenditure and no offsets, losing $1.2 billion from the Commonwealth, building Metronet ... increasing school expenditure, promising buckets of money that don't exist."

Dr Nahan said the Liberals had a plan, however, to privatise poles and wires utility Western Power.
