WA man jailed 17 years for mum's murder

A schizophrenic man who murdered his 68-year-old mother by bashing her with a frying pan and cutting her throat will spend at least 17 years behind bars.

A schizophrenic man who whacked his mother across the head with a frying pan, stabbed her in the chest with a knife, and slashed her throat has been jailed for at least 17 years.

Samuel Edward Ashby, 40, was sentenced to life behind bars in the West Australian Supreme Court on Friday for murdering his 68-year-old mother, Deann Jean Ashby, as she cooked him dinner in June last year.

Ashby heard voices telling him to kill her and told police he believed she was a psychopath who was trying to poison or gas him, and he wanted to "take her out" to stop her from killing other people.
