West Australian MP Barry Urban will reportedly quit politics after admitting he wore a police overseas service medal he was not entitled to and lied about a diploma, triggering another by-election in the state.
After the revelations emerged last year, Mr Urban stepped down from Labor but remained the independent member for Darling Range.
Before the Procedures and Privileges Committee could hand down its report into Mr Urban’s conduct on Tuesday, Mr Urban told Seven News he would resign "to put this nightmare" behind him.
"This is a situation I regret and it will haunt me for the rest of my life,” he told the TV network on Monday.
When Mr Urban attempted to clarify his bona fides in parliament in November, he addressed the first controversy to spark his downfall, saying he put in an order to buy a commemorative international police service medal from a military store but instead received an Australian Police Overseas Service Medal.

Mr Urban said he served with British police from 1989 to 1998 and WA Police from 2005 to 2012.
But he failed to clarify his claims about investigating war crimes in Bosnia.
Mr Urban also admitted he had falsely claimed to hold a diploma in local government then apparently lied again by stating how many modules he had completed.
The WA Local Government Association disputed his claim he completed all but one, saying he had not finished any of the 10 modules in the course.
Mr Urban also told parliament he was seeking to substantiate other tertiary qualifications amid reports two UK universities he declared to have attended had no record of him.
Labor will now have to contest the seat in a by-election.
