WA Nats 'can't stand each other': McGowan

An abandoned spill for the WA Nationals deputy leadership shows the small team of nine "can't even be in the same room as each other", the premier says.

West Australian Premier Mark McGowan has lampooned the WA Nationals over leadership turmoil, suggesting it reflects disharmony within the entire state team.

Nationals MP Vince Catania last week flagged a spill against deputy leader Jacqui Boydell but it was reportedly called off after some colleagues changed their position, while leader Mia Davies threatened to quit if it went ahead.

The drama prompted Mr McGowan to declare the WA Nationals "a mess".

"You're nine people who can't even be in the same room as each other," he told parliament on Tuesday.

The abandoned spill comes less than a fortnight after the WA Liberals elected Liza Harvey unopposed following the resignation of Mike Nahan, who rejected suggestions he had been a seat-warmer since the party's 2017 election thrashing.
