West Australian police are searching for a 59-year-old prisoner who escaped from custody while at a supervised sporting event.

Bernd Neumann, also known as Brett Faulkner, is a prisoner at the Wooroloo Prison Farm but escaped about 4pm (WST) on Saturday while at a supervised sporting event at the Thomas Moore Park in Wilson.

Neumann is described as fair-skinned and about 183 centimetres tall, with a slim build and long grey hair in a pony tail.

He was last seen wearing a yellow and black polo shirt, black shorts and a green hat.

Police says he's considered unpredictable and should not be approached.

Any sightings or information should be reported immediately to police on 131 444.
