WA residents to leave 'undefendable' town

Residents of Northcliffe in the WA Shire of Manjimup have been told to evacuate immediately as their homes are now "undefendable" from a bushfire

The West Australian town of Northcliffe is "undefendable" from an out-of-control bushfire, authorities warn, with residents urged to evacuate immediately.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) also said the subdivisions of Parkview, Bracken Rise and Double Bridge are under imminent threat of fire.

It says the fire is strong and erratic, moving in a north-northwesterly direction, with embers landing in Northcliffe and spot fires starting up to 120 metres ahead of the blaze.

Residents have been told to leave in a northerly direction towards Manjimup, if they feel it safe to do so.

The emergency relocation point is located at the Pemberton Sports Club, on Club Road in Pemberton.

A watch and act alert is also current for residents west of Northcliffe in an area bounded by Richardson Road, Tattenham Road and Ladhams Road.

The fire, which was sparked on Friday by lightning, had by Monday morning jumped Chesapeake Road about eight kilometres south of Northcliffe and began moving towards the town.

Flames have been up to 20 metres high and about 20,000 hectares have been burnt.

Meanwhile in the Great Southern region, a watch and act alert remains in place for people in the southern part of Lower Hotham, in an area bounded by Long Gully, George, Lower Hotham, Dee Vee and Harvey-Quindanning roads.

The fire is burning in forest on both sides of the Murray River and on both sides of the Hotham River, and is moving in a southerly direction. About 2000 hectares have been burnt.

It was a fraught weekend for firefighters around the southern part of the state, particularly in Waroona south of Perth, where one home and several sheds, cars and equipment were destroyed by another lightning-sparked blaze.

In preparation for a second week of challenging fire conditions, 137 Victorian firefighters will arrive in WA to provide support.

Lightning has caused more than 120 fires this week alone and storms may continue through to Wednesday, Bureau of Meteorology forecasts show.

Since January, WA's emergency service workers have battled at least 2900 fires.
