A 10-year-old boy took a handgun to a Perth school to show his friends but did not threaten anyone, his principal says.

The child carried the weapon in his bag and took it with him to Comet Bay Primary School on Monday.

Principal Matthew Osborne said the weapon was confiscated, police were called immediately and all parents were notified via letter.

"I have assured parents that at no time were students threatened," he said in a statement on Friday.

"It appears the child brought the item to school to show friends." Mr Osborne said the students who saw the gun had been counselled.

Police are now investigating who owns the gun and how the child came to be in possession of the weapon.
