WA welcomes new year with extreme fire day

Extreme and severe fire danger warnings have been issued for parts of Western Australia for New Year's Day.

Western Australia's Pilbara region is bringing in the new year with an extreme fire danger day.

Residents in Karratha and coastal areas of the shire of Ashburton have been warned that hot, dry conditions mean any fires will be unpredictable and dangerous.

A severe fire danger day has also been forecast for parts of the central west on Thursday.

Inland areas of Greater Geraldton, Chapman Valley and Northampton are at risk, as well as residents in the shires of Mingenew and Morawa.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has warned people in affected areas to have their bushfire survival plans ready.
