A WA woman has died after her four-wheel drive left the road and hit a tree.

The 61-year-old woman is Western Australia's first road death over the official Christmas and New Year toll period.

Police say she was driving along Chester Pass Road at Gnowangerup when her Mitsubishi Outlander veered and hit a tree about 3.45pm on Friday.

The Mira Mar woman, who was the sole occupant, died at the scene.
