WA woman fined $6000 for animal cruelty

A 38-year-old Perth woman has been fined $6000 and banned from having contact with animals for 10 years after being convicted of animal cruelty.

A Perth woman who allowed her dogs to starve to the point that their hip bones and ribs were protruding has been convicted of three animal cruelty offences and fined $6000.

Roberta Walton, 38, was in charge of a tan Jack Russell Terrier cross and a black Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross when she was visited by RSPCA inspectors in December 2012.

Inspectors were investigating a complaint that two dogs at the property were in very poor health and observed the animals were indeed severely underweight.

The dogs were immediately taken to Midland Veterinary Hospital for assessment where the veterinarian noted that both canines were emaciated and eight to 10 per cent dehydrated.

The Staffordshire terrier also had an infestation of ectoparasites that would have been alleviated through flea control, the RSPCA said.

Walton has been prohibited from having any contact with an animal for 10 years and was also ordered to pay $1015 in costs.
