WACA asks for $175 million venue funding

WACA chief executive Christina Matthews says a planned $207 million redevelopment of the venue will help attract WAFL football to the ground.

The WACA Ground hopes to host WAFL football by 2018, but they face a nervous wait to see if their funding request of $175 million from the state government will be granted.

Blockbuster cricket games in WA will move to the new 60,000-seat Perth Stadium once it's complete in 2018, with lower-drawing fixtures to remain at the WACA.

The WACA is planning to undergo a $207 million redevelopment that will turn the ground into a boutique venue with a capacity of 15,000.

As part of the plan, the West Australian Football Commission will also move to the WACA, with WAFL games to be held there once the oval is resized.

Dedicated player and high performance training facilities will be built as part of the WACA redevelopment, and the venue will also feature far more shaded areas in a bid to encourage more people to attend both cricket and football games.

The WACA scoreboard will be retained.

The WAFC have already nominated the WACA as their home of choice, but no co-tenancy deal can be struck until they finalise their negotiations with the government in regards to football's future funding model.

WACA chief executive Christina Matthews is hopeful the government will contribute the funds needed for the project to go ahead.

It's anticipated the redevelopment of the WACA will be undertaken via a six-stage approach.

The WACA hope the full development will be completed in time for the 2020/21 season.
