Wales make big cuts to RWC training squad

Wales coach Warren Gatland says the door isn't closed on Mike Phillips, James Hook and Richard Hibbard, despite them being cut from the RWC training squad.

Wales have cut Mike Phillips, James Hook and Richard Hibbard from their Rugby World Cup training squad.

The trio - members of the British and Irish Lions squad which beat Australia in 2013 - were among eight players dropped by Wales coach Warren Gatland on Thursday.

A 38-man group will now continue preparations for Wales's Rugby World Cup opener against Uruguay in Cardiff on Sept. 20.

Australia, England and Fiji are the other teams in Pool A with Wales.

Gatland said: "it's been a difficult task reducing the squad down and ... there will be disappointment from the players but it's important to stress that the door is not closed."

The final World Cup squad is named by Wales on August 31 and Gatland highlighted how "a lot can happen between now and then."
